Wetherby is a traditional Yorkshire Market Town, where small specialist shops still can be found, interspersed with small restaurants, cafes, and tearooms which make it a pleasant place to stroll round all day. Wetherby's origins are as a staging post through the centuries for travellers between London and Edinburgh. Now it has developed into a busy market town, but still retains its Thursday Market, granted by Royal Charter in 1240. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was inhabited from at least Neolithic times. Bronze Age finds have also been recorded in villages around Wetherby.
There is evidence that the Knights Templar, www.templarhistory.com/ and Knights Hospitaller, www.orderofmalta.org/ were granted property in Yorkshire around the Wetherby area.
