Local Information for Cranleigh

Cranleigh has long been associated with the unprovable title of "England's largest village": this settlement is part of the Waverley district of Surrey, and was until the mid 1860s "Cranley". The Post Office insisted on changing the spelling to avoid confusion with nearby Crawley in West Sussex. The name is popularly believed to come from the large crane's breeding ground there; hence the crane on the top of the water fountain in the middle of the village, which was lately removed for the construction of a Sainsbury's supermarket in Stocklund Square (which was initially opposed by the majority but accepted as a good idea soon after it was built).

Overall, the resident population of the Waverley district increased by 2.4% in the ten years to 2001.
