Synonymous with horse racing, the famous town of Newmarket in Suffolk has numerous attractions celebrating its role in helping to create the sport of horse racing as it exists today, and it remains the location of the National Stud. It’s not all horses though; the town has a vibrant shopping and culinary scene that draws tourists on its own merit.

Newmarket Racecourse is where Britain’s first official horse race was conducted more than three centuries ago. Charles II, whose patronage helped the popularity and spread of horse racing as a sport, even rode his own horse to first place here in one memorable race. Today, Newmarket has two courses: the Rowley Mile ‘Course of Champions’ that hosts spring and autumn racing and the July Course, where summer events are held in a setting with a unique ambience.
