Local Information for Ambleside

Ambleside at the head of Windermere in the Rothay valley has a population of around 2600, is a good centre for walking and is a central area for visitors with excellent links to the Lake District. Ambleside is associated with William Wordsworth who was born in the nearby Cockermouth, and lived for much of his life in and around Ambleside, Grassmere, Penrith and went to Grammar School in Hawkshead. Windermere lake ends about a mile from Ambleside and for those passengers on the many pleasure steamers (diesels in reality) plying between Waterhead at Ambleside, Bowness about 12 miles down the lake and Lakeside at the far end of the lake, can come as a shock. The one mile stroll to the centre of Ambleside is crowded with shops selling a wide variety of goods, hotels and cafes.
