Local Information for Redruth

Redruth is a town in the south-west of Cornwall. It lies to the east of the A393 road, approximately 8 miles west of Truro, 12 miles east of St Ives and 5 miles north-west of Falmouth. It is true to say that all towns have a history and some have more than others, Redruth is no different although it has no walls, castles, and a cathedral showing they are “ancient” towns.

The Redruth we see today is almost wholly a product of the last 250 years. It owed its growth to its good fortune in lying at the centre of what was in the 1700s one of the richest parts of land in the world. It was the deep mining of copper after the 1730s that brought Redruth out of its status of quiet market town, which in reality was a village. Formerly overshadowed by its neighbours of Truro, Helston and Falmouth, it became one of the major urban centres in Cornwall.

Given the importance of mining to local employment it was a major catastrophe when plummeting world prices of copper and tin cause...More
