Delabole takes its name from the quarry around which it grew and since the 15th century the village has been linked with the quarrying of slate. The quarry is over 150 metres deep and 1.5 kilometres in circumference and produces a bluish grey slate that is of a very very high quality. Prior to the late 19th century Delabole consisted of three separate hamlets, Pengelly, Medrose and Rockhead.
