Abingdon
Originally part of Berkshire, Abingdon became part of Oxfordshire in 1974 when the boundaries were redrawn. Located just a few miles south of Oxford, the town boasts a history stretching back to the Bronze and Iron ages, while the profusion of good restaurants and bars here will appeal to night owls.
There are several interesting features in the town including the excellent Abingdon Museum, housed in the impressive 17th-century County Hall, designed by Christopher Kempster, a mason of Wren’s. The museum allows visitors to learn about prehistoric times in Abingdon as well as the Roman period. Also of interest is Abingdon Abbey, one of Britain’s richest abbeys prior to Henry VIII’s decision to dissolve the monasteries.
